2021-04-13 · Nervous pathways of smell. The pathway of olfactory conduction begins with the olfactory receptors —small, slender nerve cells embedded in large numbers (about 100 million in the rabbit) in the epithelium of the mucous membrane lining the upper part of the nasal cavity. Each olfactory receptor cell emits two processes (projections).

The olfactory nerve (CN I) is the first and most rostral of the cranial nerves. Along with the optic nerve, it is actually a peripheral outpost of the central nervous system. The bipolar cell is the first-order sensory neuron located in the roof of the nasal cavity, immediately inferior to the cribriform plate of the ethmoid bone. The olfactory nerve is purely sensory in function and transmits the sense of smell. The olfactory nerve originates in the nasal mucosa on the upper part of the nasal cavity as special sensory cells (neurosensory cells of the mucosa), which are the first-order neurons in the olfactory pathway.

The axons of the olfactory receptor cells carrying olfactory sensation from olfactory epithelium (1st order sensory neurons) collect to form small bundles(o

The Notch signaling pathway regulates stem cell proliferation and differentiation in multiple tissues and organs, and is required for tissue maintenance. However, the role of Notch in regulation of olfactory epithelium (OE) progenitor/stem cells to maintain tissue function is still not clear.

The central processing pathways of the human olfactory system are not fully understood. The olfactory bulb projects directly to a number of cortical brain structures, but the distinct networks formed by projections from each of these structures to the rest of the brain have not been well-defined.

The olfactory nervous system is a hierarchically ordered neuronal pathway that consists of three main stations: the olfactory epithelium, olfactory bulb and olfactory cortex. It can occur when tumours of the meninges ( meningiomas ) invade the olfactory nerves .
